Gomersal Primary School – Creative Writing Workshops

Gomersal Primary School – Creative Writing Workshops

It has been a pleasure to work with Year 4 and 5 pupils at Gomersal Primary School. I spent three days working in their stunning Art Room, alongside their very inspiring Art Teacher, Mandy Barrett. The children are used to working creatively and they all made wonderful scrapbooks to record their ideas in for the project. After giving them some background information about WW1 and life in the trenches, the children went on to create a detailed character sketch of either a soldier or nurse, being careful to give them a name from that era. The children then chose a loved one for their soldier or nurse to write a postcard to and they invented an address. After planning and drafting their postcards, they produced a final copy in their best joined up handwriting. The finished pieces are fantastic and include wonderful details such as complaints about the rats, gratitude for parcels containing cake and requests for more warm socks!
